William “Bill’ De Shazo was almost born with a palette and brush in his hand, for it was at age seven that he became fascinated with sketching.  He grew up working as a cowboy on family cattle ranches throughout New Mexico and Arizona. He was painting by the time he was twelve, was an All-State football player in high school and followed the southwestern rodeo circuit as a bronc and bull rider, continuing to sketch and paint the western scenes around him.

Leaving the desert, DeShazo moved to Southern California to attend California Western University. He became fascinated with the ocean while he worked months at sea as a commercial fisherman out of the port of San Diego. He continued his formal art instruction in 1961 at the Laguna School of Fine Arts where he became fascinated with the glazing techniques of the Old World masters. He studied and read all he could on them, developing his own unique style.

De Shazo's superbly executed, romantic seascapes reflect the use of the great classical masters' glazing technique involving the layering of multiple coats of translucent color upon color to create great depth and inner light.  Each painting can have as many as 30 layers of glaze, and transparent oils, before the final details can be applied.

His great imagination and sensitivity coupled with mastery of this extremely difficult technical process to such a fine degree will undoubtedly make a place for him in the annals of art history and guarantee, to all who are fortunate enough to possess one of his works, virtually limitless investment growth potential. In his portrayal of the subject he loves so well---the sea against rocky shore and majestic bluffs---William De Shazo has no peer. Sketching and painting since childhood, he has developed a craftsmanship that is unique among marine classical artists. De Shazo captures the ethereal quality of light that brings life to his paintings. Through the mastery of dramatically diffused light he captures the mercurial moods of morning and evening at seaside---subtle lights, translucent through breaking waves, the flashes of sunlight in the water. Collectors of fine art, and seascapes particularly, understand the appreciation in value of the DeShazo in their collection. De Shazo works are collected by various celebrities and dignitaries and resides as part of private collections all over the world, including the U.S., England, Japan, Europe, and the Middle East.
